About Meké

Meké was started by myself and my sister-in-law, Kerri McConnel, in 2006, effectively as a hobby to sell our hand crafted jewellery creations. Since then, a lot has changed, with Kerri leaving the partnership, and Meké expanding in an unanticipated direction to focus more on children’s jewellery making parties.

The Meké ethos has strong parallels with the Arts and Craft Movement in art, architecture and design in the late 19th century. This movement focussed on a return to high quality, traditional, handcrafted and bespoke techniques for production and was a rejection of mass produced, generic, impersonal and poor quality methods.

My goal is for you to enjoy wearing my jewellery and accessories as much as I enjoyed making them. All my jewellery and accessories are handmade by me with time, care and love. Even if of the same design, slight variations in the shape, colour and texture of any group of beads or components means that no two pieces are exactly the same. Each piece therefore has its own character and quirks.

I like to think that people don’t find my jewellery; each piece finds the person it was made for.

About the Meké logo

The Meké logo was developed to reflect the underlying design aims behind my creations. The overall logo design is simple and elegant, yet bold and striking. The border is pretty, feminine and delicate, highlighting my love for intricate detail. The logo also incorporates the characteristic motifs of sinuous, flowing, organic lines from the Arts and Crafts Movement (such as the capital M font), to represent the corresponding Meké business goals of producing high quality, handcrafted and individual items.

About Me

I am Marianne Taylor. After spending years studying and working in chemistry and science jobs (NERD ALERT!) and many other tedious positions, my long-suppressed creative side could be contained no longer!!!

I now run the business on my own, as an outlet for my love of design, creativity and teaching (and to basically keep me sane because unfortunately I still have a non-creative day job as well :(). My focus is still largely on jewellery, but I have grand plans to branch out into many other areas in the near future....

When I am not making jewellery and accessories, hosting parties or falling asleep at my desk at my day job, you might find me:

  • Collecting bright and shiny pretty things (or just staring whimsically at them)
  • Reading, or browsing in book shops and libraries (hey, I told you I was a nerd!)
  • Baking sweet treats for people to enjoy (not so good at the everyday dinner preparation though!)
  • Watching romantic movies and mini-series based on ye olde books (Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South is my favourite, followed closely by the BBC’s Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice)
  • Camping
  • Mountain biking or gymming (never as often as I should be though!)
  • Daydreaming
  • Chatting and making things with my craft group (but mainly just eating cake)
  • Tending to our vegie garden (ok, so this rarely actually happens, but I do occasionally stand on the back verandah and think about doing it)
  • Visiting heritage buildings and historical places
  • Spending time at home with my wonderful husband, our two dogs, our 3 birds, and our numerous tropical and marine fish
